A Letter to Our Host Country

Dear Spain,

It has been brought to my attention that I am very negative toward you in this here blog. Sorry about that. It's just me, I'm a very critical person. I am critical of many things, not only you, in fact I am even more critical of things I know even better than you. Isn't that a sorry realization.

I start out with high expectations of anything or anyone. And because I am so critical, guess who gets the brunt of most of my criticism? Me. Yes, it seems no one is safe, not even myself. When the idealism wears off of a new situation, and reality sets in, that's when the beast emerges.

I am not a polished analyst in my criticism either, instead my thoughts and opinions swirl around in my head, bumping together, eclipsing one another and not really staying in a coherent order. Therefore when things actually come out of my mouth, they are usually incomplete thoughts with holes for the world to see. So my 2 cents are worth more like a mere $.01, if that, and not even €.01. (Oops, a crack at the value of the US dollar - no one is safe.)

So, Spain, cariño, I am sorry. I will do my best to change my attitude, or at least give a more balanced view, and you try to take my commentary with a grain of salt, or a teaspoon, whatever it takes. Because really you are a wonderful country offering beauty, history, culture, fun, and most of all great people. We have made some really wonderful friends here who are the most important thing to us. That is why I am glad that my dear friend brought it to my attention that there was too much bashing going on. I don't want to hurt the people who have enfolded us into their lives so easily and warmly.

Con cariño,
Amy

ps-Just so you know I know: one can get bad haircuts in the US or anywhere else for that matter; the urban assault vehicle strollers are in many countries, but since in the US we drive everywhere I'm not used to seeing so many; and spontaneous organization can be stressful for someone like me, but I am working on accepting the liberation from schedules that comes with it.

pps-God has a lot of work to do on me yet (as if you hadn't noticed). I think this is one of the reasons He sent us to you, Spain, you have many new things to offer me and my family. I am a tough nut to crack so it may take some body-slamming on your part to get through to me, but I have confidence that you'll do it, and that eventually, I will get it. Thank you for your patience and disculpe las molestias por las obras.

Overly critical? I think that is being too hard on yourself. Simply put Amy, you're a realist who's been in many places, seen the good and the bad, and are just trying to live your life the best way you can. I dont think you are negative of Spain at all. Matter of fact, you've talked about many glowing things about Spain on your blog (food, culture, health care and definitely all the beautiful landscape). I cant believe someone actually called you negative for simply blogging that as of yet, you've been unable to get the haircut you want in Spain! Please dont let anyone tell you that you need to censor your blog. I want to hear what you have to say.. roses or crusties.. good or bad.. just dont sugar coat it! I love your blog just the way it is. :)

Amy,
First off, hi. And long time no chat, but it's not like that's your fault or anything (I hear communication is a two way street)
Second, Awesome blog! I wish we had known about this months ago! We could have at least been following your progress!
Third, I wouldn't beat yourself up on the whole criticism thing. I mean, all you are doing is pointing out that our world if full of sin, right? In all it's forms? And I think you have the whole forgiveness/grace thing figured out too. Drop us a line if you get a minute! Jossi's at her same address and mine is adam@photobby.com
Have a good one, it might hit 76 here today!

Adam
