The youngest 5 kids have been in summer day camp for 4 weeks now. They are learning a little Spanish.
Today, I was at the Friday open market in our neighborhood where they sell clothes, kitchen items, textiles, etc. Mara, the day camp supervisor was shopping at the market while the teachers had the kids at the pool. She stopped me and asked if Eva had ever been here before. No. She said that she is speaking Spanish. She said that today Eva yelled to her classmates, "Vamos chicos! Todos a clase!" (let's go guys! Everyone to class!).
It will be interesting with kids ranging from 6-14 to see how quickly they learn at what age. We have our own language experiment going on.
At first sight, it seems that the younger kids are learning from context and not from translation which I think will mean faster learning.
