I've spent the last few days reading a few friends' blogs about their recent trip to Haiti. The video snipets (not related to New Life Link or HFC) I've posted below, one of them was on another mom's blog. They give a small glimpse into real life in Port-au-Prince. Cite Soleil is a slum in PAP.
Another lovely friend who sends me thoughtful links sent me one about a new documentary, "Ghosts of Cite Soleil," produced by Wyclef Jean. I haven't seen it and I'm hoping that our two nearby, original language theaters, that play more indie and art house type films, I hope they get this one. http://www.ghostsofcitesoleil.com/site.html
Bear in mind that not all of Haiti is like what is depicted here. There are small pockets where the poverty is not so grinding and even smaller pockets where people live somewhat comfortably. But the fact remains that there is an overwhelming amount of work to be done in Haiti to bring it to a point that meets basic standards of human rights and needs. Even after I traveled through rural Guatemala and Mexico, I hadn't seen ANYTHING that would have prepared me for Haiti. These videos don't do it justice. I would pray that God would lay it on everyone's heart to show up, to actually go on a mission trip that has a purpose of helping someone rather than taking a vacation somewhere. Get INTO it! Learn from the experience of it and you will know. It is a whole different level than watching or reading from the sidelines. Why else would we be on this Earth if not to get into the game?
